Karachi Heat Priority Map

About

This map helps a relief team decide where drinking water, oral rehydration salts and cooling support should go first during a heatwave in Landhi Town, Karachi — and shows why each area is ranked where it is.

What it is not

Why it exists

In June 2024 the Edhi Foundation reported receiving far more bodies than usual during a heatwave in Karachi, and said most came from poorer workers’ neighbourhoods affected by long power cuts. Deciding where to send limited supplies during a heatwave is a real problem, and it has to be decided quickly. This is an attempt to make that decision better informed.

Who made it

Samraj Lal Ukrani, a first-year A Level student in Karachi.

How it was built

Built with Claude Code as a coding assistant. The research question, the choice of pilot area, the indicators, the weights and the fieldwork are Samraj’s. Until he sets the weights with the project’s tool, the site runs on placeholder equal weights and says so. Every judgement call is written down, with its reasoning and its alternatives, in DECISIONS.md.

Feedback

This is a first version, and the most useful thing anyone can tell us is where it is wrong. If you work in relief in Landhi and the map disagrees with what you see on the ground, that is worth knowing — please say so in person to whoever shared this with you.
